The Wheel of Fortune turns in the sky, inscribed with four Hebrew letters (YHVH โ the divine name), four alchemical symbols (mercury, sulfur, water, salt), and the words TARO arranged cyclically (which also reads ROTA: wheel, and TORA: law, and ORAT: speaks). Four creatures occupy the corners of the card: a winged man (Aquarius), an eagle (Scorpio), a lion (Leo), and a bull (Taurus) โ the four fixed signs of the zodiac, representatives of stability within the turning wheel.
On the wheel itself: the Sphinx at top (riddle and wisdom, surveying the cycle), Typhon descending (chaos and fate), and Anubis ascending (resurrection, the guardian between states). The snake on the descending side is Set, the Egyptian god of chaos and change. The monkey-headed figure is Hermes-Thoth.
Card Ten is the threshold card of the Major Arcana โ the halfway point, the transition from the more personal first ten cards to the more universal second ten. Ten reduces to One (1+0), signaling that the cycle has completed and a new one is about to begin.
Upright Meaning
Upright, the Wheel of Fortune announces change โ significant, structural, larger-than-personal change.
