The Sun blazes in full radiance, its rays both straight and wavy (consciousness and unconscious, masculine and feminine). Before a garden wall hung with sunflowers, a young child rides a white horse without saddle or bridle โ unselfconscious, freely joyful, crowned with flowers. The child holds a red banner (the flag of awakening, of achieved vitality), arms wide, face turned toward the light.
Card Nineteen is the card of achieved consciousness โ the child who has safely passed through all the previous cards and now rides openly through the garden of the world. Twenty-one is the number that reveals the full Major Arcana; nineteen is the card two before the end โ not yet complete, but irrepressibly, expansively, genuinely alive.
The garden wall in the background no longer confines: it has become a backdrop to celebration. The child is clearly beyond it. The sunflowers face the source of all light. The horse's white color echoes the Death card's horse โ the same beast, now fully integrated and carrying the living child joyfully forward.
Upright Meaning
Upright, the Sun is among the most unambiguously positive cards in the deck. Clarity, vitality, success, genuine joy, and the warmth of being fully and authentically yourself in the world: all of these are promised, and unlike the optimism of some earlier cards, the Sun's optimism is grounded โ it has passed through all the previous lessons to get here.
This is not naive happiness but earned joy: the kind that knows what darkness looks like and chooses the light anyway. The child on the horse has no anxiety about the future โ not because the future is guaranteed, but because the present is full enough.

Self-doubt, excessive pessimism, or a cynicism that prevents you from recognizing what is actually going well in your life โ these are the reversed Sun's characteristic shadows.
