The Star shows a naked woman kneeling at the edge of a pool under a night sky filled with eight stars โ one large, seven smaller. She pours water from two pitchers: one into the pool (the unconscious, the waters of the inner life), one onto the land (the earth, the material world). She is unclothed โ unguarded, unashamed, in complete and natural communion with the world around her. An ibis perches in the tree behind her.
Card Seventeen follows the Tower, and this is no accident. After the lightning and the rubble comes the first clear night sky โ the quiet after the storm, in which the stars become visible that the noise and structure of the Tower had obscured.
The Star is the card of hope as an active principle โ not wishful thinking but the deep, quiet knowing that renewal is real and that healing is underway. Eight is the number of the infinite (the lemniscate again), of regeneration, of the octave returning to itself transformed.
Upright Meaning
