The Moon hangs in the sky between two towers, shining down on a winding path that disappears into the mountains. In the pool below, a crayfish (the earliest stirrings of consciousness rising from the unconscious depths) begins to crawl toward the path. A dog and a wolf howl at the moon from the shore โ the domesticated and the wild, both drawn by forces they cannot name. The moon's face is both a new and full moon: all lunar phases simultaneously present.
Card Eighteen is the card of the liminal โ the state between states, the consciousness between sleep and waking, the fog through which the familiar becomes strange. The Moon rules by reflected light rather than its own: everything seen under the Moon is an approximation, a shadow of the thing rather than the thing itself.
The two towers echo the two pillars of Justice and the High Priestess โ the gateposts through which consciousness must pass to advance. The path continues through them and into darkness. The invitation is to walk it anyway.
Upright Meaning
Upright, the Moon indicates that things are not as they appear. Confusion, illusion, projection, and fear-based interpretation are distorting your reading of the situation. What feels certain probably isn't. What feels threatening may be a projection of the inner crayfish still learning to walk.
The card does not advise turning back โ it advises proceeding with caution and heightened self-awareness. Notice what you are projecting. Notice what your anxiety is inventing. Notice the difference between a genuine intuitive signal and a fear-generated story.

Reversed Meaning
Reversed, the Moon can indicate that the fog is lifting โ a period of confusion is resolving into greater clarity. The illusion is being recognized as such; the projection is being reclaimed; the fear-based story is being set down.
Alternatively, the reversed Moon can signal repressed anxiety and confusion being forced below awareness rather than genuinely resolved. The uncomfortable material is still present โ it is simply not being looked at.
