The Lovers shows a man and woman standing naked and unashamed beneath the gaze of the archangel Raphael (healer, communicator, guardian of travelers). Behind the woman stands the Tree of Knowledge, with a serpent twined in its branches. Behind the man stands the Tree of Life, bearing twelve flames for the twelve zodiac signs. Above them both, the angel blesses the union.
Card Six is not simply a romance card โ it is the card of conscious choice. The Garden of Eden setting is deliberate: this is the moment before the choice, the moment of innocence about to become experience. The man gazes toward the woman; the woman gazes toward the angel โ there is a chain of attention suggesting that human love, when conscious and chosen, becomes a path toward the divine.
