Card Symbolism
The Devil towers above two human figures who are bound to his plinth with chains โ but whose chains are loose enough to slip over their heads. They have chosen not to leave, or have forgotten they could. The figures are versions of the Lovers: they have descended from innocence into bondage. Bat wings (darkness, inverted spiritual vision), a goat head (Pan, primal nature, scapegoating), an inverted pentagram on his forehead (matter ruling spirit rather than spirit elevating matter).
Card Fifteen is the shadow of card six (The Lovers): while the Lovers depicted conscious, integrated union, the Devil depicts unconscious bondage. The number fifteen reduces to six (1+5=6) โ this is the shadow of love, the dark twin of choice. The torch he holds points downward, illuminating only the material plane.
The key visual element: the loose chains. The figures are not truly imprisoned โ they are imprisoned by their own belief that they are imprisoned. This is the Devil's ultimate teaching.
Upright Meaning
Upright, the Devil names what is binding you โ and names it as something you are participating in, even if the participation feels involuntary. This can be an addiction, a compulsion, an obsessive relationship, a belief system that operates like a cage, a pattern of self-sabotage so habitual it has become invisible.
The card is not shame โ it is illumination. Naming the chain is the beginning of loosening it. The Devil upright says: this is real, this is operating in your life, and you have more choice in relation to it than you are currently exercising.
This card can also refer to material obsession โ the grip of money, status, physical pleasure, or power when these become the organizing principle of a life rather than one of its components.
Reversed Meaning
Reversed, the Devil signals release โ the moment when a chain has been recognized clearly enough to be loosened and dropped. This is the beginning of liberation from a compulsion, an addiction, a toxic relationship, or a limiting belief system that has operated below the threshold of conscious awareness.
The reversal can also indicate that the shadow pattern has become so extreme it can no longer be denied or rationalized. The bottom has been hit. What comes next, if met honestly, is genuine change.
Occasionally: the reversed Devil indicates that what seemed like bondage was less constraining than it appeared โ the chains were always loose, the prison was always mental.
Practical Guidance
In Love & Relationships
Upright in love, the Devil most often indicates a relationship characterized by unhealthy attachment, obsession, codependency, or a bond maintained more by fear of being alone than by genuine connection. The chemistry may be intense โ the Devil is not loveless โ but the intensity is not the same as health.
This card asks: are you in this relationship because you freely choose it, or because you feel unable to leave?
Reversed in love: breaking free from a toxic relationship, or recognizing an unhealthy pattern clearly enough to begin changing it. Liberation is underway.
In Career & Finances
Upright in career and finance, the Devil indicates that work has become a trap โ whether through overwork and workaholism, through a golden cage (well-compensated work that is destroying your wellbeing), through financial debt that feels inescapable, or through a professional identity so tightly held that alternatives feel impossible.
Financially: compulsive spending, debt, or the use of money as a means of control in relationships.
Reversed in career: the beginning of financial liberation, breaking a workaholic cycle, or finally confronting a professional trap that had been rationalized as a necessary reality.
Spiritual Perspective
The Devil is the card of shadow integration โ the willingness to look directly at what has been driving behavior from below consciousness. Carl Jung's Shadow is the Devil's psychological counterpart: the repository of everything the ego refuses to own, which then runs the show from underground. To work with this card spiritually is not to condemn what it reveals but to bring it into the light with enough honesty that it can be transformed. The Devil chains people who do not look at him. Examined, he loses his power.
