The name Ingwaz derives from Proto-Germanic *Ingwaz, the name of the fertility god Ing (or Ingvi-Freyr), worshipped especially among the Ingvaeones โ the coastal Germanic peoples whose name derives from his. The Old English Rune Poem records: "Ing was first seen by men among the East-Danes, till, followed by his chariot, he departed eastwards over the wave. So the Heardingas named the hero."
