Progressions and Directions
Methods of inner development โ how your chart evolves as you grow.
What Are Progressions?
Progressions are a method of astrological forecasting based on the symbolic movement of the natal chart through time. While transits show external influences, progressions reflect inner development โ the evolution of character, values, and life priorities.
Secondary progressions (the most widely used method) apply the "day-for-a-year" principle: each day after birth symbolises one year of life. The planetary positions on the 30th day after birth represent the progressed chart for age 30.
Progressions move far more slowly than transits โ the progressed Moon changes sign roughly every 2.5 years, while the progressed Sun shifts sign every 30 years. These transitions describe profound shifts in a person's life.
How It Works
Pandorium supports four methods of progressions:
1. Secondary Progressions โ 1 day after birth = 1 year of life. The most widely practised method.
2. Solar Arc Directions โ all planets advance by the arc travelled by the Sun since birth.
3. Primary Directions โ based on the diurnal rotation of the Earth. The oldest method (Ptolemy, Cardano).
4. Tertiary Progressions โ 1 lunar month = 1 year of life. A complement to secondary progressions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do progressions differ from transits?
Transits are the actual movement of planets in the sky โ external events. Progressions are symbolic movement โ inner development. Transits answer "what is happening?" while progressions answer "who am I becoming?"
Which progression method is best?
Secondary progressions are the most popular and time-tested method. Solar arc directions excel at precise event timing. Primary directions are used in classical astrology. The optimal approach is to combine multiple methods.
When does the progressed Sun change sign?
Approximately every 30 years. This is a significant event marking a fundamental shift in self-identity. A person born as an Aries may "become" a Taurus by progressions around age 30 โ and this is often clearly noticeable in how they show up in the world.
